A Bronx Tale (2016-11-Longacre Theatre-Broadway)

Type de série: Original
Théâtre: Longacre Theatre (Broadway - Etats-Unis)
Durée : 1 an 8 mois
Nombre :
Première Preview : Thursday 03 November 2016
Première : Thursday 01 December 2016
Dernière : Sunday 05 August 2018
Mise en scène : Jerry Zaks • Robert De Niro
Chorégraphie : Sergio Trujillo
Producteur :
Avec : Nick Cordero (Sonny), Richard H. Blake (Lorenzo), Bobby Conte Thornton (Calogero), Ariana DeBose (Jane), Lucia Giannetta (Rosina), Bradley Gibson (Tyrone)
Commentaires : Directors Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks bring their triumphant New York musical to Broadway, following an acclaimed run in Millburn. Mirroring the gritty setting and finger-clicking music of fellow Big Apple musical Jersey Boys, A Bronx Tale takes place in the early 1960s, and follows the fortunes of a local Bronx kid who is drawn into the world of organized crime, much to the horror of his bus driver father. The story is based on actor Chazz Palminteri's one man show, which De Niro previously adapted for the big screen in 1993.
Presse : "Sometimes plain old pasta with red sauce is just what the doctor ordered. 'A Bronx Tale'... might be called the musical-theater equivalent of that classic comfort food. It doesn’t break ground or dazzle with an unusual recipe — like, say, mixing rap and American history — but it delivers reliable pleasures with polished professionalism and infectious energy." Charles Isherwood for New York Times

"'A Bronx Tale' at the Longacre Theatre packs some tasty ear candy and fine performances, but it’s as conventional as it gets and could use a surprise or two." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"Aside from Machiavelli-quoting mobster Bobby—played with expertly calibrated swagger by Nick Cordero—none of the characters command interest, and Alan Menken and Glenn Slater’s doo-wop–heavy score is far too lightweight for a plot that features murders and racial hate crimes."
Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"There's no point giving a Bronx cheer to this formulaic but entertaining crowd-pleaser." Frank Scheck for Hollywood Reporter

"After the 1989 solo show, the 1993 movie directed by Robert De Niro and the 2007 Broadway production staged by Jerry Zaks, where else could this show go but back to Broadway as a musical starring Nick Cordero? Is it a good fit? Not really, but there’s something nicely symmetrical about the material progress. Next up: surely an opera." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires longs: A 2009 Broadway revival of the show opened on March 1, 2009 at the Nederlander Theatre. The cast starred Oliver Platt as Nathan Detroit, Lauren Graham, in her Broadway debut, as Adelaide, Craig Bierko as Sky and Kate Jennings Grant as Sarah. Des McAnuff was the director, and the choreographer was Sergio Trujillo.
Presse : The show opened to generally negative reviews. The New York Times called it "static" and "uninspired", the New York Post said, "How can something so zippy be so tedious?" and Time Out New York wrote, "Few things are more enervating than watching good material deflate." However, the show received a highly favorable review from The New Yorker, and the producers decided to keep the show open in hopes of positive audience response. The New York Post reported on March 4 that producer Howard Panter "[said] he'll give Guys and Dolls at least seven weeks to find an audience."

Presse : BEN BRANTLEY of the NEW YORK TIMES says “The real thrill, at least for those who want something more than recycled chart toppers and a story line poured from a can, is that Mr. Young (Frankie Valli) has crossed the line from exact impersonation into something more compelling. ”
HOWARD KISSEL of the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS says "There's no point in beating around the bush — I had a great time."
CLIVE BARNES of THE NEW YORK POST says "It's a show still dynamically alive in music while, as a drama, it catches the very texture, almost the actual smell, of its time. "
CHRIS JONES of CHICAGO TRIBUNE says "They'd better start digging more tunnels from New Jersey, because when word gets out on this thing, every Garden State wiseguy is going to be calling for a limo and adding to the traffic clog."
MICHAEL SOMMERS of STAR-LEDGER says "Love classic rock 'n' roll? Enjoy juicy behind-the-scenes true stories? Then without a doubt -- and especially for Baby Boomers -- "Jersey Boys" is a hot new Broadway show for you."
JACQUES LE SOURD of the JOURNAL NEWS says "The book by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice is a little long on narration, and you may find your eyes glazing over until the point, two-thirds of the way through the first act, when the boys break into television with an appearance on "American Bandstand." From that point on, though, you snap awake and happily ride the wave."
MICHAEL FEINGOLD of the VILLAGE VOICE says "For a new musical, Jersey Boys seems amazingly like a rerun."
ELYSA GARDNER of USA TODAY says "Flawed but unexpectedly winning homage to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons"
MICHAEL KUCHWARA of ASSOCIATED PRESS says "Shows there still is theatrical life in mining pop hits from the past."
FRANK SCHECK of the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER says "Director Des McAnuff has delivered a fast-paced production that flows in cinematic fashion, thankfully avoiding the bombast that afflicts so many similarly themed musicals."

Commentaires : This turned out to be much more than a jukebox musical, and was superbly directed as a kind of show-business documentary saga moving across the decades and also providing concert-style performance interludes of some of the best-loved songs of the era. It opened on Broadway in November 2005 and won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The London production was re-created by the New York team, and won an Olivier as the Best New Musical of 2008.
18/3/2008 - 9/3/2014: Pricne Edward - London
12/3/2014 - 26/3/2017 : Piccadilly Theatre - London
Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Slickly animated production." PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Keeps us waiting through about 40 minutes of bewilderingly detailed background about the genesis of the group before treating us to an elating blast of 'Sherry', their first big hit...The book by Woody Allen collaborator, Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice has a terse, savvy wit." CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "It has a quality you rarely find in musicals - gritty honesty - as well as the best collection of pop hits since Mamma Mia!...Jersey Boys superbly captures the thrills and tensions of four testosterone-charged young men discovering fame and fortune after years of dogged failure." PAUL VALE for THE STAGE says, "This piece remains very much a jukebox musical." BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "It has the character, the narrative interest and the sense of place – as the backcloth indicates, the industrial badlands west of the Hudson River – to rise way above its genre." LYN GARDNER for THE GUARDIAN says, "A pleasant, forgettable night out; no more, no less."

The cast is yet to be announced.

Never mind Jay-Z and Beyonce, the Estefans were the original superstar music couple. She is one of the biggest selling singers of all time, while he's the mastermind producer behind dozens of massive names. What's better still is the story of their rise to fame, a true rags to riches tale, which is as close to the American dream as you can get. On Your Feet! is a new Jukebox musical which charts their careers and relationship, all soundtracked by Estefan's genre-defining greatest hits, including 'Rhythm is Gonna Get You' and 'Words Get in the Way', as well as some all-new tracks.
Presse : "The recipe may be familiar, but the flavor is fresh in 'On Your Feet!,' the half-formulaic, half-original and undeniably crowd-pleasing musical about the lives of Emilio and Gloria Estefan." Charles Isherwood for New York Times

"A paint-by-numbers portrait can still be colorful — and a kick. Case in point: 'On Your Feet!,' a predictable but entertaining show about Gloria Estefan and her music-producer husband Emilio." Joe Dziemianowicz for New York Daily News

"A serviceable jukebox musical." Adam Feldman for Time Out New York

"'On Your Feet!'... is a fine addition to the ranks of jukebox musicals." Mark Kennedy for Associated Press

"Already proving a solid crowdpleaser in previews, the show features a star-making lead performance from radiant newcomer Ana Villafane." David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter

"Newcomer Ana Villafane (who originated the role in the show’s Chicago premiere) is a knockout in the leading role, the dazzling centerpiece of this flashy, splashy spectacle helmed by Jerry Mitchell." Marilyn Stasio for Variety

Commentaires : This was based on the 1986 Francis Ford Coppola film. In spite of mostly good reviews and an eventual Olivier nomination for Ruthie Henshall, the show closed after just eight weeks. It was one of the many shows which suffered when tourism collapsed following the 9/11 events. It subsequently toured the UK and, as a result, apparently recovered its investment.
Presse : SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says, “Henshall stops the show whenever there is much of a show to stop. The plot is somewhat skeletal, but as a dance festival it is superb.”

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, “The story’s transition from movie to the big musical stage isn’t a failure — but it’s only a partial success.”

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “No one could describe Peggy Sue Got Married as a vintage musical. But those seeking undemanding entertainment, and a star performance that often transforms the turgid into the triumphant, should certainly give it a whirl.”

MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, “On the positive side, Ruthie Henshall as Peggy Sue combines a Doris Day girl-next-door charm with a hint of sexy Dionysian wildness. “ He goes on to say, “The musical is meant to be a dynamic form. This one, with its stand-by-your-man ethos, feels like a hymn to emotional stasis.”

PATRICK MARMION for THE EVENING STANDARD says, “Thankfully, Ruthie Henshall provides the wind beneath the musical's wings - especially with her virtuoso, Celine Dion-like numbers. “ He goes on to say “Together, the individual efforts give the doubtfully-matched music and story an evens chance of staying wedded in the West End - for the time being at least.”

LISA MARTLAND for THE STAGE says, "Gaudio's music with lyrics by Leichtling, though hardly memorable, is pleasing enough."

ROBERT HEWISON for THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "This is Henshall's musical, and she gives it all she's got. "

Commentaires : With songs from the back-catalogue of the five-time Grammy Award-winner, Summer tells the story of Donna Summer, who, after selling 140 million records worldwide, was one of the best-selling artists of all time. She was known as the Queen of Disco and for her hits such as “Love to Love You Baby,” "I Feel Love," “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls,” "She Works Hard for the Money," "Last Dance," and “MacArthur Park,” among many others, but this crowd-pleasing bio-musical allows a deeply personal insight into the woman behind the dancefloor fillers.

From childhood molestation to domestic abuse to corporate exploitation, Ms. Summer never had an easy road to stardom thanks to many of the men in her life, but Summer explores the ways she, as a woman in a male-dominated industry, took control of her own career and her own destiny. Her story is narrated by three actresses in the title role (Tony Award winner LaChanze as 'Diva Donna,' Ariana DeBose as 'Disco Donna' and Storm Lever as 'Duckling Donna') who represent Donna at various points in her lifetime and who also effortlessly slip into other roles such as Donna's mother or daughter. They break the fourth wall and create an easy rapport with the audience, as she confides in us her secrets and secret longings. And there doesn't seem to be any topic off limits, even addressing her leaving her first child to pursue her career and an unfortunate homophobic slur that caused a well-documented backlash against her.
